Director-producer Clifford John Bole, who helmed more than 40 episodes of various “Star Trek” series, died Feb. 15 at his home in Palm Desert, Calif. He was 76.
Bole directed 25 episodes of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” most notably, “The Best of Both Worlds”, seven of “Deep Space Nine” including “Defiant” and 10 of “Voyager” including “Dark Frontier part 1”.
The Bolians, a race of aliens introduced in “TNG” episode “Conspiracy,” were named for him.
“When (the Bolians) first happened I thought someone was pulling my leg, maybe (Rick) Berman or someone else,” Bole told StarTrek.com during an extensive 2012 interview. “Then it became an item. I was proud of it. To hear your name constructed into the name of an alien race, I thought it was great — and I still do. It comes up all the time. People ask me about it all the time. I’m amazed that people still follow the show enough to ask about it.
That is too bad. My thoughts are with his family.
