George Takei was one of the recipients of a Shorty Award, handed out Monday at the 5th Annual Shorty Awards Ceremony.
The Shorty Awards “honor the best in social media; recognizing the people and organizations producing real-time short content across Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, Foursquare and the rest of the social web.”
Takei received his award for Distinguished Achievement in Internet Culture. He beat out the popular InternetGrumpy Cat for the honor.

A behind-the-scenes video of Star Trek Into Darkness has been released showing Zachary Quinto talking about how ‘beautiful’ he thinks the sequel is.
The actor was interviewed for the video and said he was amazed to see the end result.
He said: ‘It was pretty magical to see what they could create this time.
‘It’s stunningly beautiful.’
Director JJ Abrams said that he was ‘excited’ about the follow-up to 2009′s Star Trek and thought film fans were looking forward to seeing what had happened to their favourite characters.
Abrams said: ‘The goal for this movie was definitely to up the ante as much as we could.
‘There are a lot of characters that people are anticipating seeing — Kirk and Spock, Bones, Scotty, Uhura, Chekov and Sulu.’
He added: ‘I am more excited than I can tell you.
‘The action in this movie, the scale of the movie is lightyears beyond what we did in the first movie.’
The short featurette also features interviews with Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana, who gushed ‘this is the kind of film that 3D is made for’.
Abrams called Star Trek Into Darkness a ‘fun and challenging experience’.
‘This is like everything I’ve ever done wrapped into one movie,’ he said.
Star Trek Into Darkness is released in UK cinemas on May 17.
