A new internet campaign is afoot, this time the petition is for the USS Titan, Captain Riker’s ship, to be included in the Official Star Trek Starship Collection.
So far the publication has included all the usual Federation ships, as well as the most popular alien spacecraft, but it has also given us some of the more rare and obscure ships that Star Trek has to offer. These include such ships as the Bajoran Solar Sail, the Xiindi, the temporal timeship seen in Voyager and a handful of others that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else.
The idea of including the Titan may be a controversial decision though, considering that the Titan has never been seen on screen, and therefore is not considered canon – therefore NOT an OFFICIAL ship.
Pocket Books has released a series of novels, called Star Trek: Titan, which was based aboard Riker’s ship. A competition to design the new vessel was held. Despite early conjectures that the Titan would be as large as its name suggests, the stipulations of the contest reveal that the ship is approximately 450 meters long, which is notably smaller than the last two starships Enterprise, and was only slightly bigger than the Intrepid-class. The contest rules established that within the novels’ continuity, the Luna-class had a crew complement of 350 and was intended as an extended-mission, deep-space explorer, apparently as a result of Starfleet’s efforts to get back on an exploration standing following the Dominion War.
The winning design appeared similar to the Sovereign-class, but on a smaller scale, and with a “roll-bar” above the saucer section, similar to that found on the Akira-class.
All that being said, I think that the Titan SHOULD be included, and I have signed the petition, I hope you guys will too. The petition can be found here.
