Much has been said about the new reboot of Star Trek, the new Enterprise design, the bridge, the technology, but one of the biggest debates has been over JJ Abrams apparent dislike to the traditional TOS era uniform.
In the 1st Star Trek reboot movie, Kirk wore a number of uniforms during his first few years in Starfleet.
We first see him in his Starfleet Academy gear, a red jacket with the Starfleet delta on the collar.
Next up, when on board the Enterprise, he is wearing the black shirt.
None of which had we seen the slightest of similarities in the Original Series. A complete move away from what we know and expected.
But of course we do have the standard gold, blue and red uniform shirts we have come to love and admire, but with a slight twist. The black collar is a separate undershirt, with a lower cut over-shirt bearing the department colour. Easily recognisable to the original series attire.
One of the other complaints by some is the alternate timeline of these movies, hence the differences in the uniforms, but there are respectful nods to the prime universe. One of these was Pike wearing what looked like a version of the uniform Admiral Kirk wore in The Motion Picture, the pyjamas if you will.
Peter Weller’s character is seen wearing a very similar uniform when briefing Starfleet’s top brass over the London bombings, again with some minor differences.
What ever your thoughts on the movie in general, and uniforms in particular, who have to admit that the nods to the Original Series and to the previous movies are a great way to bridge the two timelines in a way that possibly shows the evolution of Starfleet may not be so different to what we, as Trekkies, have come to admire and expect regarding this franchise.
