A friend of mine, Richard Ashbee, took up a challenge that he had not embarked on for years. To build a model starship. Richard was given a Revell 1/1000 scale USS Enterprise NCC-1701 as a birthday present, so had to give it a go.
He decided early on that he wanted to light the model to show it in all its glory, and the results are pretty impressive.
“Recently becoming a father I had to drop my my main hobby (guitarist and singer in a band) for something quieter I could do after bedtimes. I got the Revell Enterprise kit for my birthday. I googled a few pics of completed models and thought ‘Why not really go for it and light it up’.
I started at Hobby Craft and Maplins. Experience has taught me that tools bought from Ebay are junk, and its worth buying paints, glue, files, knives etc from Hobby Craft. But Maplins are way over priced and your much better off buying your LED’s from Ebay… a lot of them come pre-wired with resistors and flashing relays built in.
It really was satisfying work from, painting to designing the circuitry. I only really went wrong when I lost patience with something and rushed it.
Biggest tip… use automotive primer (enamel paints destroy the hobbycraft primers) and TAKE YOUR TIME!”
Good advice and a gorgeous model well done!
